Wedding themes only grow in popularity every year. It makes sense, as most people like their wedding day to show off the intricacies of their personal tastes, and choosing a wedding theme allows for just that.
Some brides and grooms-to-be know their wedding theme immediately, perhaps because they have a mutual love of a film franchise or they instantly know they want something classic. Others aren’t so lucky. If you fall into the latter category, here are six useful ways to choose your wedding day theme!
1. Start with a Venue
Rather than choosing a theme and then building your wedding plans around that, consider starting with the venue. It’s an effective way of picking a theme, as the venue itself provides plenty of inspiration. Look at beautiful venues for private weddings, visiting the ones that pique your interest the most. For example, if you fall in love with a seafront venue, you could pick a beach theme. Or, if you find yourself choosing a castle-like venue, a fairytale-themed wedding may make the most sense.
2. Think About Your Best Memories
No one person should pick the theme; instead, it should be a collaborative effort made by the two people getting married. To ensure the theme matters to both individuals in equal measure, think about your best memories together – perhaps when you took your first beach vacation, or the first time you met in a karaoke bar – and then use it as inspiration for your own wedding theme.
3. Speak to a Wedding Planner
Having a wedding planner is an excellent idea, as it will make the planning process far more straightforward. Plus, they can help with ideas. If you are truly stuck on the theme, talk it through with a wedding planner who has lots of experience of what works – and, more importantly, what doesn’t.
4. Throw Ideas into a Hat
Your wedding day comes with much expectation – you often feel like every decision needs to be the perfect one. This can make decision-making much harder. To help with that, write out multiple wedding themes with your partner and then throw those ideas into a hat. You can then choose to go with the first one you pull out, or you can learn what theme you really want when you realize you want to pick again!
5. Browse Through Wedding Magazines and Websites
There are tons of wedding magazines and websites out there – your job is to go looking for them for inspiration! You could stick to the classic wedding magazines, or you could specifically look for ones that provide ideas for more alternative weddings if that’s what you are into. During your research, you may spot a wedding photo that you’d love to emulate.
6. Consider the Season
Always consider the season when choosing your wedding theme. Are you getting married in summer, autumn, winter, or spring? The season you tie the knot matters, as some themes match colder (or warmer) weather than others. For example, an October or November wedding could focus on woodlands and harvest, perhaps all tied together under a fairytale theme. On the other hand, you can only really enjoy a tropical wedding during the summer months!
